Taming the Data Monster
Health and Safety professionals are bombarded with data from all kinds of monitoring technology. Interpreting, disseminating and archiving this information are vital parts of the job. Now Casella CEL has simplified the task with its new data management software package that downloads and manages exposure data for a wide range of occupational hazards, including noise and dust.

Called Casella Insight, the software can download survey data gathered by monitoring equipment such as sound level meters, noise dosimeters and personal air sampling pumps, and allows it to be stored on a central database. Exposure data can then be managed by criteria such as person, place or process and viewed in tabular or graphical formats that uniquely combine multiple hazards simultaneously to allow an overall exposure calculation to be made.
Data can be imported from other devices and exported or sent to other users and colleagues, allowing for easy data sharing across organisations. An integral report wizard enables extremely comprehensive reports to be prepared, and the package also manages all the instrument calibration scheduling and storage of calibrations certificates.

Environmental Noise in Colour
 |
Casella CEL, the UK's specialist provider of environmental monitoring solutions has developed an all-new model in its CEL-600 Series of digital sound level meters.
The Casella CEL-621 represents the smallest 1/3rd octave-band noise analyser in the world and includes statistical (Ln%) values making it the perfect tool for short-term, hand-held, environmental noise assessments. Casella CEL is renowned for making instruments easy to use, which has been a fundamental design goal in the development of this instrument. So, from simple baseline surveys to full 1/3rd octave band analysis, all measurements can be performed quickly and easily through a simple, intuitive menu driven system. The high resolution display assists the user by presenting results in a simple colour-coded format that minimises the risk of misinterpreting data collected, quite literally, in the field. On board memory and simple USB download allow data to be included in reports, once back in the office without any specialist software.
The CEL-621 uses all-digital technology that can measure in just one span up to 140dB, negating the need for range adjustment and thus eliminating errors which may otherwise result. Digital technology also means that measurements are inherently stable and repeatable unlike older generations of analogue instruments, still on the market. Yet another unique feature is that it measures all broadband and octave measurement parameters simultaneously so the user doesn’t have to worry if the instrument has been set up properly; all parameters may be chosen retrospectively.
“The CEL-621 really ‘raises the bar’!” said Product Manager, Tim Turney. “It is truly pocket sized and compact, yet packed full of technology designed to make life easier for the environmental practitioner or occupational health professional. The CEL-621 is future-proofed by being fully upgradeable without the need to even return the instrument to Casella. This allows new features to be added as they become available or as budgets allow”.
The CEL-621 is supplied as a kit in a rugged briefcase, which also includes an acoustic calibrator, windshield, software and USB download cable. Both instrument and calibrators come with calibration certificates as standard, documenting compliance with the latest IEC 61672 Sound Level Meter standard.

Casella’s CEL Extends Winning Range of Sound Level Meters
 |
Casella hasn’t rested on its laurels since it launched the CEL-200 series of sound level meters last year to help H&S professionals comply with the implementation of the Physical Agents (Noise) Directive – the Control of Noise at Work Regulations (2005) in the UK. The introduction of the CEL-242 and CEL-246 brings new capability to the range, which now stands at four instruments. The new models can store time history onto an onboard memory capable of logging over 400,000 measurements. Data is stored as files compatible with spreadsheet software packages (.csv format) and can simply be transferred via USB then graphed as required with any standard package.
The CEL-200 range can display a non-decaying maximum hold value on a number of screens showing the A or C frequency weighting and slow, fast or Impulse time responses. The time history facility of the new models shows how the noise has fluctuated and allows users to understand at what point noise control measures are necessary. The equipment has a large, high-resolution display which show results either numerically or by bar graph and can give a time history trace over the last 1 or 5 minute period.
Ideal for users who need a simple, low cost meter, the CEL-200 Series is fully compliant with all national and international accuracy standards unlike some budget priced “indicators”. Each meter is available on its own or as part of a full measurement kit (e.g. CEL-246/K1) with a matching acoustic calibrator and other accessories, including calibration certificates and two year warranty. Optional software (dB24) is required in order to download the stored data.

Nothing average about the new CEL-244
 |
Noise readings required by the Control of Noise at Work Regulations are often difficult to obtain with low-cost instruments, especially where noise levels are fluctuating. A new solution is our Casella CEL-244 Integrating Sound Level Meter, which displays the average noise level in addition to the instantaneous readings just offered by most low-cost instruments.
The CEL-244 is the latest addition to our CEL-200 series and was launched in January 2009 to meet the need for a low cost yet fully compliant sound level meter. The CEL- 244 measures either an ‘Leq’ or ‘Lavg’ to satisfy both EU and US legislation and is available as part of a full measurement kit (CEL-244/K1) with matching acoustic calibrator and accessories, or as a stand alone product. |
The CEL-244 can also display a non-decaying maximum hold value on a number of screens showing the A or C frequency weighting and slow, fast or impulse time responses. Its large, high-resolution display can show these results as either numerical values or by bar graph and can give a time history trace over the last 1 or 5 minute periods.
The CEL-244 will be an attractive instrument for users who need a simple, low cost meter, but who must be confident that the technology is fully compliant with all the national and international accuracy standards.

Colour Coded Sound with the CEL-620
 |
Casella CEL has developed a colour-coded display system for sound level meters which simplifies their use and reduces the risk of misinterpreting data. Casella CEL has now launched the all new 620 series of pocket sized meters which incorporate the high resolution colour display into the smallest and easiest to use sound level meter on the market.
The Casella CEL-620 series is now the smallest octave band analyser in the world, and probably the strongest too. The colour readout assists the user by displaying results in a simple colour coded format that is impossible to misinterpret. Ease of use has been a key design goal in the development of this instrument, so from simple point and shoot measurements to full industrial hygiene assessments, all measurements can be performed quickly and easily.
This is industrial equipment and was designed with an overmoulded case to give it the strength and durability needed for tough industrial environments. The CEL-620 uses all digital technology that can measure in a range up to 140dB, dismissing the need for range adjustment and eliminating reading errors which may result. Another unique feature is that it measures all occupational noise parameters simultaneously; rather than changing the instrument setup you simply change which noise parameters you wish to view knowing that all parameters can be viewed afterwards even if not selected at the time.
"The CEL-620 really presents the next generation of workplace sound level meters," said Tim Turney, Product Manager for Casella CEL. "A real-time octave band analyser has never been so compact and yet filled with technology designed to make life easier for the health and safety professional." |
The CEL-620 is supplied as a kit in a rugged briefcase, which also includes an acoustic calibrator, windshield, software and USB download cable. Both instrument and calibrators come with calibration certificates as standard, documenting compliance with the latest IEC 61672 Sound Level Meter standard.

More information on the Hydro RT is available from www.casellameasurement.com
Casella Measurement - Leaders In Environmental Evolution!
 |
Casella have now achieved ISO 14001 accreditation, and are the first in its sector to achieve this environmental accolade. Many companies are now demanding that their supply chain partners comply with this standard, so acheiving it has not only improved our environmental impact, helped to reduce waste and costs but has also given us a major competitive edge.
Casella Measurement has been supplying scientific instruments since 1799 and customers have included Dr Livingstone and Charles Darwin. This year Casella Measurement has achieved its own evolutionary triumph and has become the first company participating in the region-wide Business Environmental Training Initiative Plus (BETI+) to achieve ISO 14001 certification.
We are also the first in our sector to achieve environmental recognition under the management systems Standard. |
As possibly the oldest company in the UK producing environmental monitoring and measuring equipment, it also made sense for Casella Measurement to be able to demonstrate its own behaviour could be held up to scrutiny.
The fact we managed to go through the whole process from start to finish in just over ten months is also testament to the determination of the whole company to make a statement about our commitment to the environment.
The company’s approach to ISO 14001 is a textbook example of how to get it right.
Having established management commitment, Casella Measurement then went about explaining to its entire staff what the company was trying to achieve and why. Short environmental awareness presentations were carried out for everyone. “People are generally aware of their own environmental impacts – they’re switching off lights and recycling at home. We aimed to make them bring this behaviour into work,” says Mark Thomson (Environmental Officer).
The emphasis on involvement has also paid off in terms of behaviour and cost savings. Following environmental awareness training, the company’s water use went down by a massive 75%. During a recent washroom refit, staff suggestions resulted in fitting infra-red motion sensors and push taps to conserve water and electric hand dryers to reduce waste.
The business case for looking at environmental issues has also become evident in other areas. Re-designing just one set of packaging has yielded financial savings. Removing foam and using card has not just reduced the size of the box by 60%, but also reduced production costs by over 80% per unit and that’s without taking into account the reduction in shipping costs.
For more information please contact our QA / Environment department or ask for our Marketing Team.
New GSM/GPRS Rainfall Datalogging System available
