CASELLA MONITOR CUSTOMISES TIPPING BUCKET RAIN GUAGES FOR OMAN'S HARSH ARID CONDITIONS
23rd January 2011
Ministry of Regional Municipalities and Water Resources installs over 200 systems for accurate measurement of rainfall levels.
Sultanate of Oman’s Ministry of Regional Municipalities & Water Resources (MRMWR) has recently installed additional Casella Monitor (www.casellameasurement.com; 01234 844100) Tipping Bucket Rain Gauges (TBRGs) in the Arab country’s more remote mountainous and desert areas.
The MRMWR currently has in excess of 200 Casella Monitor TBRGs installed at a wide range of locations across Oman. The systems, which were originally chosen by the customer for their reliable performance during testing, as well as accurate data and ease of use benefits, have been customised by Casella to cope with the Oman’s harsh environment.
In accordance with the roles assigned to it in Royal Decree No 55/2006, the MRMWR relentlessly strives to provide water and municipal services to communities within the regions of the Sultanate, and establish vital facilities and infrastructure aimed at improving living conditions.
Ahmed Said Al Barwani, Water Resources Expert at the MRMWR comments:
“Casella Monitor’s TBRGs are exceptionally user friendly, easy to install and require minimal maintenance. The overall service from the company is excellent and they were particularly quick to react when I requested some further improvements to the systems and hardware to cope with our dry, arid conditions.”
He continues:
“They were very co-operative and made the required modifications without hesitation. As a result, the TBRGs continue to perform well in Oman’s harsh environment and provide us with accurate measurements of rainfall. This invaluable data allows the Ministry to fulfil its commitment of harnessing water resources, and making them available to communities, but also ensuring their rationalisation and conservation.”
Specialists in hydrology and rainfall monitoring equipment, Casella Monitor is currently basking in a 30% increase in sales of its high performance TBRG over the past 18 months. The system incorporates new calibration multi-point methodology, which Casella Monitor believes has resulted in one of the best, most cost-effective solutions on the market at present.
TBRGs are sensors for accurately measuring rainfall level and events such as thunderstorms. The Casella Monitor TBRG model is a reliable and extremely robust transducer, designed as a stand-alone sensor for operation within an existing logging system, such as the Casella Monitor Automatic Weather Station.
The unit comprises a divided bucket assembly which is pivoted at the centre. Rain collects in one side of the bucket, which then tips when a predetermined volume of water has been collected. The tipping action discharges the collected water and repositions the opposite side of the bucket under the discharge nozzle ready for filling.
Ahmed Said Al Barwani concludes: “The major advantage is Casella Monitor’s willingness to adapt its equipment to suit our special requirements. In fact, we are now in discussions with the company about the potential inclusion of a telemetry system to our existing TBRGs using GSM/GPS, which will then enable us to receive real time data.”
Casella Monitor is part of Bedford-based Casella Measurement - one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of high performance occupational health, safety and environmental monitoring equipment. A wholly-owned subsidiary of IDEAL Industries Inc, Casella Measurement’s market leading products are exported world-wide through an extensive network of distributors and agents. CASELLA ENHANCES CEL-630 SOUND LEVEL METERS
18th November 2011
Addition of "Voice Recording" functionality allows user to annotate a measurement and eliminate the need for written notes.
Following the launch earlier this year of its ground breaking CEL-630 series of exciting new sound level meters, Casella CEL (www.casellameasurement.com; 01234 844100), has made a number of enhancements that will further improve one of the smallest devices of its kind currently available in the market place.
Among the latest modifications is the addition of ‘Audio Recording’, which has a number of uses and applications including the ability to record voice notes before or after a measurement, allowing the operator to annotate a measurement without needing to write anything down.
In addition, ‘Data Markers’ allow information to be marked when downloaded and the corresponding audio to be captured, either because the operator wishes to note something of significance or to remove extraneous noises.
Another new feature is the ability for events to be triggered from a set decibel level, particularly useful during unattended noise monitoring where it is of interest when noise reaches a certain level. Events on the CEL-630 can be triggered from multiple parameters and conditions and the audio is stored with the event.
For added convenience, all audio recordings can be played back via headphones or downloaded to a PC.
Quick and easy to use the ‘switch on and go’ units’ are available in a range of models, some with voice notes, others with fully triggered events, in order to meet customers’ different requirements and budgets.
Incorporating the latest digital technology, the CEL-630 has a single measurement range of up to 140dB, with no set-up adjustment required when obtaining and viewing different noise parameters.
Tim Turney, Market Manager at Casella Measurement says:
“The CEL-630 range is designed to accurately measure environmental, industrial and other occupational noise levels. With these latest enhancements, it provides an even more competitive option for use in a wide range of noise monitoring situations to ensure compliance with the requirements of noise measurement protocols.”
Casella CEL (working environment) is part of Bedford-based Casella Measurement - one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of high performance occupational health, safety and environmental monitoring equipment.

NEW MODIFICATIONS TO CASELLA CEL-350 PERSONAL SOUND EXPOSURE METER ALSO AVAILABLE TO EXISTING USERS
8th October 2011
Latest enhancements allow user to view information while a measurement is in progress & can be locked to prevent results from being seen by unauthorised personnel
Demonstrating its continued commitment to improving its range of industrial hygiene and occupational health monitoring equipment, Casella CEL, has announced modifications to the CEL-350 dBadge Noise Dosimeter, which will allow the user to view run information while a measurement is in progress. In addition, the newly enhanced unit can be locked to prevent results from being viewed by unauthorised personnel.
The digital, cable-free CEL-350 Series of Dosimeters or Personal Noise Exposure Meters accurately measure all occupational noise parameters, and gives the time history of an individual's noise exposure throughout the day via a built-in graphic display.
Casella CEL Market Manager, Tim Turney, explains the background behind modifications to the firmware: "A number of our larger customers have requested the ability to see what is happening while a run is in progress to allow them to make operational decisions based on the values measured so far. This can include, but is not limited to, checking an eight-hour run after two hours to see if the dosimeter has accumulated more than 25% of the allowable noise dose.”
Turney continues: “Accumulated run results are also available in terms of the time average level Lavg decibel level measured so far. Both of these values are produced with the key threshold values of 80 and 90 dB as per the OSHA workplace noise regulations.”
Previously all CEL-350 run values were suppressed on screen during a run and were not available for viewing until the run was stopped. The intention was to secure the display against being seen by the wearer and minimise the likelihood of results being falsified.
Customers now have the option of locking the unit display to prevent the results from being viewed during a run by unauthorised personnel. It is also possible to set the run to last for a fixed duration from 30 minutes up to 12 hours in 30-minute increments.
Another benefit of the changes is that a total of seven screens are now displayed individually for approximately five seconds each before moving on to the next. This allows the supervisor enough time to see the results that are of interest without having to wait too long before moving to the next screen.
Casella’s CEL-350 dBadge range also includes the ‘Lite’ model, which offers simple functionality at a very affordable price, ensuring that cost need not be a deterrent to safety. The
'Lite' measures all the same occupational noise parameters as the original dBadge except for the time history of exposure to noise levels, so is ideal for users needing straightforward noise dose results at low cost.
Casella CEL is offering all of the latest changes as standard in future dBadge dosimeters and, as they can be reprogrammed into older CEL-350 hardware, the changed v1.13 firmware will be used to upgrade existing models.

CASELLA CEL PROVES SIZE REALLY DOESN'T MATTER WITH LAUNCH OF WORLD'S SMALLEST ACOUSTIC CALIBRATOR
28th October 2011
Easy-to-operate CEL-120 fetures rugged over-moulded design for highly accurate calibration of Sound Level Meters in the field
Leading UK manufacturer of industrial hygiene and occupational health monitoring equipment Casella CEL (www.casellameasurement.com; 01234 844100) has launched the world’s smallest acoustic calibrator. The simple, easy-to-operate CEL-120 features a rugged over-moulded design to facilitate the highly accurate calibration of Sound Level Meters in the field.
Calibration is an essential procedure when conducting any type of noise survey both before and after each measurement sequence. The process ensures that instruments are providing consistently precise readings necessary for monitoring to ensure compliance with workplace and environmental noise regulations.
Fully compliant with IEC 60942:2003 and ANSI S1.40:2006 standards, Casella’s new CEL-120 acoustic calibrator, which measures just 75.5mm x 54.0mm x 37.0mm, incorporates the latest digital technology to ensure exceptionally stable acoustic performance, as well as dual calibration level (Class 1 version) of 94dB and 114dB at 1kHz.
For added ease-of-use benefits, the CEL-120 features a simple keypad specially designed for intuitive control, permitting calibration level changes as required. When used with instruments such as Casella’s well proven CEL-600 series of sound level meters, calibration routines start automatically as soon as a calibration tone is detected.
A MEMS(Micro Electrical-Mechanical System) microphone and a digital feedback loop maintain the acoustic pressure in the cavity at the required level. An indicator shows if the sound level meter microphone is incorrectly inserted into the cavity, removing any potential for calibration error. An energy-saving automatic power off function helps ensure batteries last for up to two years.
Both the CEL-120/1 and CEL-120/2 models accept all industry standard ½” microphone capsules. Smaller ¼” microphones may be accommodated using the ½” to ¼” adaptor (CEL-4726). The relevant calibrator is also available as standard with Casella’s range of noise monitoring kits.

CASELLA CEL LAUNCHES STOCK RANGE OF COST EFFECTIVE
AIR SAMPLING CONSUMABLES
12th August 2011
Colour detection and sorbent sampling tubes, air sampling heads and full series of filters introduced to complement high performance personal air sampling systems
In a key move designed to offer its customers the convenience of a true one-stop-shop experience, Casella CEL (www.casellameasurement.com; 01234 844100) is pleased to announce the launch of a stock range of cost effective consumable products to complement its high performance personal air sampling systems for measuring employees exposure to dusts, fumes, gases or vapour.
The leading UK manufacturer of industrial hygiene and occupational health monitoring equipment is now holding large quantities of Colour Detection Tubes, GFA, MCE, PTFE and PVC Filters, Sorbent Sampling Tubes (Charcoal, Silica Gel, Anasorb, XAD), as well as Air Sampling Heads and Accessories at its production facility located in Bedfordshire.
Casella CEL Market Manager Tim Turney comments: “It is cliché nowadays, but we are delighted to be able to offer customers the benefit of a one-stop-shop facility for all their air sampling requirements. The consumables range is both comprehensive and competitively priced plus our stock holding capability ensures short lead times and fast delivery.”
The air sampling process takes a volume of air through a sampling medium. This is normally paper or solid filter media for particulates and fumes, and through sorbent materials for gases and vapours. Impingers and bubblers can also be used, or a grab sample taken into a gas sampling bag. The volume of air is measured and calculated as a concentration expressed as mg / m3 or parts per million (ppm).
Casella CEL now offers a complete suite of sampling media for particulates, dusts and fumes. These include a wide selection of filters which are used in conjunction with sampling heads or as integral sampling cassettes.
A variety of sampling heads and cassettes are available for asbestos, total inhalable, respirable and other dust fractions. All are designed for use with a controlled rate of air provided using a personal air sampling pump. Sampling media is placed within the heads directly, or using cassettes, and the sample is analysed or weighed afterwards.
Solvents, gases and vapours are sampled actively using air sampling pumps and sorbent tubes, into bubblers, gas bags or passively using diffuse sampling badges.
Direct reading colour detection tubes are glass vials filled with chemical reagents that react to a specific chemical or family of chemicals. A known volume sample is drawn through the tube via a hand syringe for a set number of pulls – indicated on the tube. It the targeted chemical is present, the regent in the tube changes colour, with the length of the colour read against a concentration scale on the tube, giving an instantaneous indication of the concentration in the air.
Casella CEL’s TUFF™ personal air sampling pumps offer the user an extremely robust, rubber over-moulded unit specifically designed for use in harsh monitoring environments. TUFF pumps are ideally suited to a wide range of occupational health sampling applications from simple abatement sampling of lead and asbestos to a more specialised industrial hygiene monitoring of dusts, fumes and vapours. TUFF systems offer a wide flow rate from 5ml/min to 4.5L/min.

MALAWI MET SOCIETY PLACES MORE ORDERS FOR
CASELLA AUTOMATIC WEATHER MONITORS
8th July 2011
The Malawi Met Society is once again calling upon workplace and climate monitoring specialist, Casella Monitor (www.casellameasurement.com; 01234 844100), for automatic weather stations and hydro rainfall loggers.
Also known as the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services, the Malawi government department currently uses around 27 Casella Automatic Weather Stations (AWSs), as well as two portable Nomad units and more than 60 Casella Hydro Rainfall loggers with tipping bucket rain gauges attached.
Part of the Ministry of Natural Resources, Energy and Environment, the Department’s increasing involvement in climate change and gathering environmental data, as well as its on-going crop insurance programme against drought, has led it to place an order to add to the number of Casella units currently in use.
Head of the Engineering Division of the Department of Climate Change and Met Services, Rodrick G Walusa, says: “We have been using Casella equipment for many years and during that time the brand has maintained its historic reputation for manufacturing and supplying durable products.”
He continues: “We wanted AWSs that would be used for all meteorological purposes ranging from aviation to agriculture, and that could be left to operate with very little human intervention or regular maintenance.”
Currently, the units are used at airports, climatological and agrometeorological stations to monitor weather and climate. The data is also used for micro weather insurance for farmers.
The hydro loggers collect and automatically transmit rainfall data from remote areas to the National Met Centre using GPRS communication. They are installed at various stations across Malawi, some of which are very remote and where there is no weather observer to collect data on a daily basis.
Rodrick G Walusa says: “The units have all been easy to set up and, when we have needed assistance from Casella, they have always been quick to respond to our requests. They are also open to suggestions and, following liaison between us, they were able to develop wind equipment for us that transmits data by radio from the airport runway thresholds to a display in the control tower almost four kilometers away.”
In addition to the AWSs, Malawi also uses the portable Nomads at VVIP functions. This allows them to cover presidential engagements in rural areas when the president travels by helicopter. The equipment can be assembled within a few minutes and enables the Department to provide services to pilots that some years ago were only provided at major airports.
Most of Casella’s units have been purchased as a result of donor funding through the likes of the World Bank and DIFID. However, the recent order for four AWSs and two Nomads will be funded by the Malawi Government.

CASELLA SETS OUT ITS PLANS FOR GROWTH
22nd June 2011
Managing Director of Casella Measurement (www.casellameasurement.com; 01234 844100), one of the UK's leading manufacturers of high performance occupational health, safety and environmental monitoring equipment, Adrian Shepherd, has laid out his growth strategy for the company, including significant financial investment in R&D and plans to double profit within a year.
Adrian, who joined Casella in October 2010, heads up a stable, highly technical organisation with over 200 years of history and great brand recognition in the market.
He says: "Casella boasts an extremely good team of people which produces a range of very carefully engineered products. As a result, we are market leaders in functionality, accreditation and price performance, which has led to global coverage."
"However, there is an opportunity to better penetrate more of the emerging markets and to secure more volume distribution as costs are reduced."
During Quarter One 2011 Casella's sales were 20% up on the same period in 2010 and, while Gross Margin has been improved by 1% and Gross Profit is already two thirds of last year's figure, Shepherd still believes that more can be achieved.
With expense to sales having been reduced by 9% and holding to the company's 2010 costs, it is obvious that Casella is spending more effectively, even with greater production.
Shepherd says: "It's all down to critical mass, outsourcing, leading local autonomy and a quicker decision making process."
He concludes: "In mature companies everyone's five-year plan is to double their business. I will be disappointed if we can't do that in half the time."
Casella Measurement, a wholly-owned subsidiary of IDEAL Industries Inc, comprises Casella Monitor, which manufactures ambient gas analysers and pollution monitoring systems, and Casella CEL, producers of industrial hygiene, occupational health and monitoring equipment.

Casella gives improved insight into dust and fume risks
8th October 2010
The latest upgrade of Casella CEL's insight occupational exposure data management software means that it can now be used in conjunction with the company's popular Microdust Pro real-time monitor to automatically download, manage and report data, so providing exceptionally reliable results when conducting workplace inhalation risk assessments.
Extremely straightforward to use, the improved insight software allows multiple exposure hazards for each employee to be combined and reported in one place and at one time. The software shows the time history of dust exposure and levels so that 'what if' calculations can be performed, in order to reduce the risk of employees' overall exposure to potential hazards and keep them safe. Insight enables data to be downloaded, analysed in tabular and graphical format by name, person, place or process, or exported into other software packages, enabling easy sharing by multiple users.
Insight can also be used to download, interpret and communicate survey data for a wide range of occupational hazards collected from other monitoring devices such as sound level meters, noise dosimeters and personal air sampling pumps.
The Microdust Pro features an internal data-logger that can store up to 15,700 data points. It has a large LCD display and a unique graphical facility, allowing the user to instantly view dust levels and trends, so making it ideal for walk-through surveys of workplace environments.
Insight is very easy to use, being designed as a tool to reduce the time and effort required by a Health and Safety professional to analyse and report data. Analysis of exposure data is performed automatically, preventing the need to manually calculate exposures for noise, dusts etc.
